Most of our jewelry at Filigree Jewelers is from an era long ago. Our collection spans seven time periods, each distinct in style and construction with history and romance as the driving factors. Learn more about each era below. We call many pieces in our collection antique; technically to be an antique it needs to be made over years ago. Victorian and Edwardian rings currently fall into the antique category. At Filigree Jewelers we do our best to ensure that each antique ring is ready for daily wear. Please keep in mind that rings with an age of over years old should be considered as precious as they are and should be worn slightly more delicately. Most of our current collection falls into one of two categories; vintage or estate. Filigree Jewelers Art Deco diamond ring collection spans from to and makes up the majority of our ring collection.

Earlier rings contain symbols of the ancient Roman gods. Rings of the mid to late empire may contain a simple Christian cross, or star cross. Rings of the Byzantine Eastern Roman Empire have more intricate devices cast into the bezel and band, and frequently contain a representation of the cross of Constantine or a Byzantine cross. I have been asked many times to advise on how to spot fake Chanel jewellery, especially now that it is so popular and expensive. The obvious reply is to handle as much vintage Chanel as you can – but this is not exactly practical for most people! If you know Chanel well it is easier to spot a fake – the weight must feel substantial, the workmanship is of the highest class, and the signature must be authentic see below. If you pick up a piece of Chanel vintage jewellery it must not feel light or tinny, I was once shown a supposed Chanel necklace that seemed to have all the correct markings but it felt very light and when the charms knocked together it sounded like a cheap wind chime!
Something else to look for is obvious soldering marks. No workmanship should be visible on a genuine vintage Chanel piece. Hangtags are another giveaway. Genuine hangtags are very thin and slightly elongated, while fake ones are often fatter and slightly more rounded. Here is a genuine hang tag:. Since the ‘s, the House of Chanel has been producing some of the highest quality costume jewellery in the world, utilising the skills of some of the most famous and accomplished jewelers, including Augustine Gripoix, the Duke of Verdura, Robert Goossens, and Victoire de Castellane.
Indeed, it was Chanel who introduced the whole concept of costume jewellery, larger than life pieces that deliberately played on the fact that the materials were not precious. Initially, Coco Chanel produced her jewellery to compliment her outfits, so they were not regarded as stand-alone pieces, but as part of the whole ensemble.

Jewellery is a universal form of adornment. Jewellery made from shells, stone and bones survives from prehistoric times. It is likely that from an early date it was worn as a protection from the dangers of life or as a mark of status or rank. In the ancient world the discovery of how to work metals was an important stage in the development of the art of jewellery. Over time, metalworking techniques became more sophisticated and decoration more intricate.
Gold, a rare and highly valued material, was buried with the dead so as to accompany its owner into the afterlife. Much archaeological jewellery comes from tombs and hoards. Sometimes, as with the gold collars from Celtic Ireland which have been found folded in half, it appears people may have followed a ritual for the disposal of jewellery. This collar was found in a bog in Shannongrove, Co.
Limerick, Ireland, sometime before We do not know what it was used for, but it was probably a ceremonial collar. On the inner side of the collar, under each of the circular terminals, is a hole. The collar probably rested on the chest and was held in place by a chain running between the two holes and passing round the back of the neck. The jewellery worn in medieval Europe reflected an intensely hierarchical and status-conscious society.

One of the best ways to avoid reproductions and fakes is to know and understand how originals are made. Reproductions are rarely made the same as originals due to changes in materials, labor costs and modern production techniques.
